Unexplainable Joy

No... I don't think it had anything to do with that... at least for me.
It was a radiant joy that wouldn't let me sit down for long. It was a deep abiding sense that was greater than just happiness. The honest truth... it had very little to do with the logistics of the evening. It had to do with being with people that sensed the same thing. The joy didn't come from the stuff that was happening around us. The joy was deep within and shared with one another. I could concur with Paul (Romans 14:7) that the kingdom of God is not eating or drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
That is somewhat explaining something that is unexplainable. The joy of the Lord is greater than any vacation experience and even more difficult to explain to people the details if they have never experienced it for their self.
Acts 13:52 says "the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." If you take that verse out of context it sounds great. But leave it in context and it sounds even greater... Paul was teaching the Gentiles about salvation and this joy they had. The Jews caused the people of the city to run Paul out of the area. Paul and Barnabas shook off the dust and went on to the next city to proclaim the same truth of the New Covenant and the joy they can receive through the Spirit.
Unexplainable joy... each believer has this deep seeded fountain in them through the Spirit. May God cause you to tap into that source today and everyday! Romans 15:13

Blogs, Forums & Communities
Just to clarify a simple personal philosophy in communication with Leavener. This blog was established as a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a few of the things the Lord is doing in my life. Blogs often reflect the personality of the author. I have chosen (at this time) to allow comments about the specific entries. Most of these have been a real encouragement to me through this process. I have removed a few that have crossed personal lines in my opinion.
An Internet forum is a website developed for the discussion of questions of public interest. At this time, I have not developed this site for that purpose. I love to discuss these issues and do quite regularly with many people. I just choose to do that communication through face to face meetings, phone calls, meals, instant messaging, e-mails, etc. That way I can know who the specific person is I am communicating to.
A community is a social, religious, occupational, or other group sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving itself as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it exists. The way a community develops is by communicating effectively and personally. There is nothing personal about communicating anonymously.
If you look to the right of this blog entry, I have listed several different ways to discuss issues with me. If you have specific questions about Leavener I would be happy to answer them other than through this blog. The best way to get your answers would be to come hang out with us this Saturday Night as mentioned in the previous entry. You'll be safe there and have the opportunity to hang out with people that absolutely love Jesus and other people.
Let's talk,

Leavener Lip Sync & Pitch-In
Here are the details for Saturday, September 29th: Leavener Community is gathering at Joe and Tammy Hilfiker's in Sheridan. Click here for a map. It all starts at 5:00 PM and ends when you're done having fun. The pitch-in: Leavener will provide meat and drinks. (This won't be just any meat... we're talking the real deal here!!!) We are asking that you bring two additional items (sides, desserts, etc...surprise us). Bring enough to share! Also, bring your lawn chairs or blankets.
Now for the fun part..the lip sync..just think, you might be invited to sing at next year's MTV awards! You don't have to be able to sing, you just need to be willing to have a little fun with the rest of us (costumes would be great!) Rusty, has plenty of suggestions for songs as well! Of course, you can also sit back and enjoy the performances, if that seems more fun.
Rusty will be sharing the central truth of Leavener that is the foundation of the three aspects of ministry as shared in previous blogs entries.
Please RSVP by noon on Wednesday, September 26th, to Rusty@Leavener.com with the number attending (so we can purchase enough meat) ALSO give us your lip sync entry. Didn't get your RSVP in by the 26th? No problem, we still want you to come. Just let us know you want to attend.
Please share this information with anyone you think would be interested as the blog entries are always an "open invitation" to everyone.
We look forward to seeing you on the 29th!

Leavener Ministry Aspect #3
The third and final aspect (as of this posting), is for Leavener to gather a community of believers that want to invest in one another because of what God has done in them and through them. This is a huge white canvas with room for lots of mistakes. It is my belief by listening to people that there is a desire for gathering that isn't so structured but will center on teaching people their identity and freedom in Jesus.
The first gathering is going to take place on Saturday, September 29th at 5:00 PM. Plan to stay awhile... that is what people in a community do. I will post more details in the next few days.
The white canvas allows for creativity and spontaneity. You just never know what the Lord might do.

Leavener Ministry Aspect #2
The second aspect of Leavener will be a disaster relief ministry. With the destruction of Hurricane Katrina there has been a heightened awareness for disaster relief needs. It is a ministry that will include many people in multiple situations. The opportunities to rebuild from the Katrina destruction will last for years. Currently, there are also call outs for relief teams to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota and Ohio.
Last year I had the opportunity to take my 12 year old son to Mississippi on a relief trip. It was an incredible experience for him to see the tragedy that these people were dealing with. He loved the opportunity to help them. On the way home, he developed an ear infection. Dad had to take care of him because Mom was not on this trip. That difficult moment is a treasure of mine because I got to nurture my son.
Leavener will raise support, collect resources and send teams to the needed areas. Our hope is that we can include churches and corporations to assist with these needs. We will provide opportunities for groups of people to help rebuild a family's home and support them through the disaster process.
Serving as a youth minister for 15 years, those students are now teenagers to 37 years old. Statistics show us that 70-80% of these students have left the institution of the church after high school graduation. They are not interested in what their parents so desire for them to be a part of. Although they have given up on the church, they have not given up on helping people. Leavener can provide ministry opportunities through humanitarian efforts that will intrigue this generation to get involved aside from the church. These opportunities will also allow parents and sons and daughters to work side by side in a life changing situation. Those are experiences and memories that will last for a lifetime.

We are in the development stages right now of sending a team on a relief trip before the end of the year. If you are interested, you can e-mail me at Rusty@Leavener.com. The dates and location have not been determined at the time of this posting.

Leavener Ministry Aspect #1
Leavener Ministry, Inc. was established in March of this year as I was transitioning from my leadership role at Northside Baptist Church. It was intended to be the bridge from what I was doing to what I will be doing. As of August, it is what the Lord has revealed to us that we are to develop through His strength. So over the next few days/entries I will try to unpack it in words.
The first aspect of Leavener will be crisis intervention. Leavener will come along side individuals, couples, families, churches and church staff as they go through their initial crisis. At the moment the crisis occurs, there is shock, grief and indecision. Leavener will support, help and love them through their crisis. Indiscretions occur with individuals, couples, families and churches all the time. It is during these times they need to hear the Good News of God's grace. Sometimes they just need to know that someone cares.
As the Leavener community grows, it will involve many to help through a multitude of crisis situations. In Acts, the community of believers gave all they had to one another. Leavener is establishing the ministry to receive donations to minister to those who are going through crisis and in need. Leavener is already recognized by the state of Indiana as a tax exempt nonprofit ministry. We are in the process of applying for our 501(c)3 through the federal government. This process has become very complicated since 9/11 and they allow start ups 27 months to complete this application. Although donations will be helpful in many situations, it will still be important to minister to physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
It is not Leavener's intention to do long term counseling. In fact, I have met with a team of local counselors and shared the plans of Leavener. They are more than willing to be used as referrals and even discussed how they can refer situations to Leavener.
As for myself, this is where the Lord has lead me in the last 7-8 years. I would have considered myself to be a "program" guy at one point in my ministry. But I definitely have a different mindset and desire to minister to people by teaching them about forgiveness and grace.

The church Indicted
For the last 12 weeks our family has visited several area churches. These churches have ranged in size from 75 to 400 to 3,000. It has been an interesting journey for us as we try to redefine the term "church" for our family. We know what it has been for the past many years and we see that it is currently very similar around our community.
We keep hearing and reading about the terms "transformation" and "community". It is what the people want and they are trying multitudes of ways to grasp and claim these experiences for themselves and their families. Some are looking for formulas, "silver bullets", programs, curriculums, retreats, pastors or truth that will lead them to this oasis. When they "hit a wall", they pick up their ball and move on to the next playing field. I can say that, because that is exactly what God has lead me and my family to do. I am absolutely OK with that change as long as it is a God-move rather than a selfish-move (that is another whole issue in itself).
Today was a huge eye-opener for Michelle and me. We attended one of the largest churches in our community and they were celebrating with a baptismal service. At one point they asked each of the attenders to participate. Around the room, they formed a river like mural by placing hundreds of pieces of paper with one word on them. The words they used were "peace", "joy", "awe", "surrender", etc. multiple times. As the worship continued they encouraged each attender to get up and go get one word off the wall that best described the experience of their baptism and faith walk. When the song had ended and virtually everyone had returned to their seat, Michelle and I were devastated as we looked at the remains on the wall. My opinion is this church is representative of the majority of churches across our country. It was apparent today the church had been indicted. During the whole service, the end of this song was the one moment that God spoke to me (and Michelle) the loudest. As we scanned the room and especially the front walls, it was apparent that all the words were chosen by the people except one. In fact, it was the only word left posted on the front walls. Can you imagine which word it was? I would have never imagined.
"AWE" was left on the wall.
It was absolutely apparent that "awe" had very little impact on the church. Without "awe", the church is doing stuff in their own strength. They may be getting a lot accomplished but imagine if "awe" was part of the experience. Then the whole world would be talking about it. Immediately I began to see the difference between today's church and the church we read about in Acts 2.
38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!" 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
You know what stands out to me in that passage besides "awe"? "Transformation" and "community". Pretty simple... The Holy Spirit showed up, lives were transformed, there was a sense of awe and they chose to hang out in community because of these things.
This is the church in its most true form. Can we really strip away all the other stuff we have made it to be over the many years? That is my prayer as the Leavener Community gathers.
See you Friday,
Rusty

11:59 PM
A couple of people in the Leavener Community have inquired about the posting time of my blog entries. If you notice at the bottom of each entry, they have all been posted at 11:59 PM. That is quite a detailed observance from you... maybe you have more free time than I do!
So what is the significance of 11:59 PM? I can't say that it is reference to a specific verse in a particular book of the Bible (although I did research that).
11:59 PM
One minute until tomorrow. A new day is coming! It is just around the corner and I can't wait.
Michelle and I would greatly appreciate your prayers these next two weeks. I have enlisted some men to be on the Leavener Board with me and we are meeting a couple times so we can get the plan out the door and on the road. (Proverbs 15:22 - Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.) (Proverbs 16:9 - A man's heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps.)
It is coming... My prayer is that it is fresh and full of Truth which translates into Good News. The Good News is really Good News!!!
I can't wait to tell you... but I will for now.

Tonight... 11:59 PM was 8 minutes after Barry Bonds hit #756!

Pressure
Pressure comes in many forms...
- Electronically = through comments left on blog sites and instant messaging
- Verbally = through investigating questions and sharing personal opinions
- Doing nothing = build up of reaction due to no action
- Expectations = Again this refers to opinions and assumptions of people
- Responsibility to provide = Given to people at the fall of man
- Physical = the force per unit area applied on a surface in a direction perpendicular to that surface.
The Leavener blog has been delayed due to an RV trip around Michigan with the Tyner Family. We had an incredible relaxing trip to Grand Haven, Traverse City (The Cherry Festival),
Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island and Monroe. Our families have vacationed together for the last three years in various spots around the country but Keith wanted us to have a taste of the RV life they experienced last summer when traveling Route 66. We had a blast. We just got back yesterday.
But there is pressure to get this site updated. There is pressure to communicate what is happening in our life. There is pressure to communicate truth. But don't misinterpret... the pressure from this blog is not that great. It's just something else I have to get done.
You want to know what real pressure is? The physical kind of pressure? Well, on an RV, you have a toilet that fills into a black tank. When that black tank gets full of refuse from two families' bodies, you have to empty it. So you attach a hose to the black tube of the tank and put the other end in a ground drain. When you pull the black handle to let the refuse dump it begins flowing through the tube. At times you have to pick up the tube so gravity will help the process of relieving pressure from the tank. Who knew that when I picked up that tube to release some pressure that it would fall apart at the neck of the tube and body refuse would spew all over the parking lot? Now that is pressure!!!! What do you do now? "Honey, get the broom and dust pan!"... "I'll buy you a new one!!!" Thanks to Connie who literally "stepped in" and helped relieve some pressure by sweeping that #@*% up.
Oh, there is more pressure. How and when does this new church begin? There is stuff happening that I never expected... it wasn't suppose to happen this way. Over the next 10 days we are going to be meeting with family and friends in Oklahoma and Texas. The drive time is typically an incredible experience for me. These drives to Oklahoma have generated many ministry ideas and plans over the years (i.e, Union and Good Friday Service with my Dad). I am looking forward to what the Lord might reveal to me during this time away.
Pressure in the Bible... all the time. I can't imagine what Gideon was thinking. Read this story in Judges 7. Gideon started with 32,000 men to defeat the Midianites. The Lord instructed Gideon that he had too many men to defeat the Midianites. With that many men, it would be obvious by whose power they won. God whittled Gideon's army down to 300 men. Think for a moment... you started with 32,000 to go into battle and now you only have 300. I think Gideon experienced a little of my black tank incident! The Good News is God delivered just as He promised. God handed over the Midianites to Gideon and his army of 300 men. The Midianites knew God was on Gideon's side and it was because of Him that Gideon prevailed. Pressure? Not with God's promises behind you.
This whole new church thing... no pressure... just rest in His promises.

This whole new church thing... no pressure... just rest in His promises.

Jesus for Sale!!!
People keep asking me about what I am going to be doing. I've said from the beginning of this adventure (December '06) that we know God is calling us to lead a ministry/church. To do that, we had to end our 18 years of service at Northside. Then I know that we are to separate ourselves from Northside. That is the season that we are in the midst of right now. If you think that is confusing for you, it definitely is for us. It is not easy to put space between your church family that you have committed almost half your life to. And of course... everyone has an opinion of what that should look like.
But as we move toward our next step, the questions come flying at us. One question that I really struggle with is "What model of church planting are you going to use?". I'm just not there. Why would I want to model a plan? Why do I have to do it like someone else? Can't I make my own mistakes? Can't you just speak the Truth and let it be? Do I have to market the Truth to plant a church?
Billboards, web sites, yellow pages ads, newspaper promos, CDs, brochures, yadda yadda... Marketing plans? What are we marketing? Jesus or the church? My lunch partner today reminded me that the church is not a business... it is something that is orchestrated by God. Or at least it should be. I'm not against these things (obviously you are reading my website). There is a difference between communicating and teaching Truth versus marketing Jesus and the church.
The church talked about in the New Testament didn't promote itself. Peter told the people to repent, be baptized (placed into Christ) for the forgiveness of their sins and they would receive the Holy Spirit. In one day, 3,000 people received those words and were baptized. They continued listening to the Truth, hanging out, eating and praying together. There was a sense of awe in the community. Amazing things began to happen. They had all things in common and shared all their possessions with each other. They consistently ate together while praising God and everyone liked them. Click on the above link and read it for yourself!
Sounds like a plan for me... speak Truth, people repent, the Spirit changes their lives, rejoice, pray, hang out and eat! How can we mess up that plan? Sound a little "idealistic"? Nah... just another unexplainable adventure!
Jesus isn't for sale. He came to give salvation for free and it cost Him His life!

What's the point?
Labels...
"Heard you weren't going to be 'Southern Baptist' anymore?"
"Are you going to start one of those 'emergent' churches?
"Are you a person of 'grace' or 'legalism'?"
"I'm not 'unemployed'."
"Do they 'get it'?"
Business meetings...
Do you know why churches have business meetings? Because of the IRS. To be "legally" (according to US government) designated a church or nonprofit organization, you must have at least one business meeting a year with specific results (i.e. budget, ministry plan, etc.)
I sat in 5 business meetings at camp last week. We actually had fun and got a lot accomplished (without Robert there).
Bagel Holes...
I heard it is to ensure the bagel bakes and boils evenly.
Sunday Bests...
Where did that come from? Who are we dressing up for? This one is a real doosey! How does one square up this thought pattern? That is like asking, "What's a Hoosier?". You'll get some real educated responses and some quick answers... but the truth is... no one knows for sure! If you said, "We need to look our best for God.", does that mean God only sees you on Sunday Mornings?...
It is at this point in my posting of this blog that a gentleman at Panera approaches me and asks me if I am from Northside. I do not recognize him at all. We reintroduced ourselves again. I'm going through my mental Rolodex of names and faces and coming up totally blank. Then he said, "You baptized me!". Mentally, I am doing everything I can to process this name and face through the small talk.
Finally, I let him know that I was no longer a staff member at Northside and the conversation turned from casual to personal. It was if I had popped the cork and this man went on to say what all God had done in his life since that baptism. The change was done outside of the traditional church routine. He explained that his salvation was very real to him and that God is doing amazing things through his life and family. He knows the Spirit has restored his life.
As I am sitting there, processing all I am able to, I still did not know this man. But he absolutely was speaking to me very specifically about my recent decisions and even mentioned the issues I started rambling about in this very blog entry. The man was speaking to my soul with all sincerity.
The very thought crossed my mind, "This man was sent to me directly today to encourage me. This is another unexplainable event. Thank you Jesus."
We shook hands and said "Goodbye". I got up and collected my stuff and he was literally gone. I know exactly what happened today... I got the point!

What do Donuts have to do with God?
Simon Birch asks the question... "What do donuts have to do with God?" The Lord revealed that answer to me in a real way.
My second day of being employed by Leavener (May 22nd), I took an impulse trip with a friend. He inquired about my "nut". I said, "What are you talking about?" He went on to explain that a "nut" is how much money you absolutely need to survive each month. Over the next 24 hours, I scrutinized my monthly budget to figure out how much of a "nut" would allow me to survive. (For those of you who know me... that means a detailed Excel file with fancy formulas... woohoo!!!)
Then on Friday, Michelle and I did our normal routine of brunch at Cracker Barrel. It was an emotional low for both of us. Tears were flowing (mostly from uncertainty). The food came and the routine prayer became more than that. It was a plea to God for wisdom and peace. I truly believe that before the meal ended, God had answered our prayer. We discussed our busy June/July family schedule and know that we are to rest for two months and trust Him. We hope to have oars in the water by August 1st for whatever adventure God has in store for us. There has been peace and joy since then. The two of us have had a great 10 days since. Thank you Jesus!
Which brings us to yesterday, June 2nd. Right before leaving for open houses and a wedding, I quickly reconciled my bank accounts for the end of the month. I opened the lovely Excel file and looked at that amount referred to as my "nut". Being the first month away from Northside, that nut was looking pretty overwhelming. I honestly said, "Lord, I have no idea how this is going to happen!"
Two minutes later, we climbed into the car to leave... Oh wait, here comes the mailman. Michelle says, "Chloe, would you get the mail, please?" Chloe comes skipping back to the car and hands the mail to Michelle. She hands me an envelope from some friends who have been tracking what God is doing in our lives. There was a check inside the envelope... oh my... that was quick Lord but it doesn't cover the "nut". Michelle hands me a second envelope. Another check... "You've got to be kidding me!!!". Within 15 minutes of questioning God, the Lord handed us two checks totaling 98% of the "nut" I had just reviewed. I turned to Michelle and said, "This is not happenstance." This is the exact situation that I referred to in my March 13th blog entitled "Unexplainable Adventure."
I have been told more than once... "You're going to have to do something... this is not going to just fall in your lap." I just can't buy that train of thought anymore. I am hanging out with my family and doing just as much ministry as I was before I quit as a staff member at Northside. I still hang out with people. I still pray with people. I still serve people. I still cry with people. I still encourage people. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PEOPLE. But truly, it is God that does it all. That may be semantics or a nice spiritual thought for you. But it is truly my way of life.
So what do donuts have to do with God? He gave Leavener all the "dough" I need for my "nut" this month! WOOHOO!!!

Just perfect...
A perfect ending... to eighteen years on staff at Northside. First of all, my Mom (Dixie), my sister (Heidi) and niece (Emily) drove all the way from Tulsa, OK to be here for this celebration.
My last official act as a Northside staffer was to baptize my friend Andy Deo. What an incredible testimony this man shares. We quickly reminisced over the last 18 months about him coming to understand his own identity in Christ. Having his boys, Ben and Nick, looking over the glass into the baptistery was a special moment.
One of the cool things they did was produce a set of "Rusty Kennedy" baseball cards and t-shirts. So the whole field was full of fun, food and memories. It was great to hang out with friends and family (some that I hadn't seen for quite some time). What had been forecasted as a chance of thunderstorms turned out to be a perfect day of weather with bright sunshine and a cool 75 degrees.

My friends at Northside planned the perfect party for my exit. It was all about baseball! It started with the National Anthem and my mom throwing out the first pitch. There was plenty of food (brats, sausage & dogs, cotton candy, nachos and of course Cracker Jacks). We split up teams and played some good ole boy softball.
Perfect... That is a word that drives many. For others, it is unfathomable. It is an adjective that can be good or bad depending on the noun. It is a description that I have come to embrace about myself. It is not my opinion. It is clearly stated in the Word of God. Have you ever considered yourself perfect? If you know Jesus as your Savior... God views you as perfect! Oh my! That is greater news than any perfect party!
Coming to the understanding of perfection in Jesus could cause others to view that as an arrogant claim. Absolutely NOT! It is because of my weakness that Jesus' grace makes me perfect. Once again, it is nothing that I have done but everything God did.
It was perfect... It is perfect... It is finished.

Leavener... it's a change agent. If I have chosen to name this ministry Leavener, then I most likely embrace the opportunity for change. But at the same time I am a loyalist. (i.e., I have served Jesus at Northside for the past 18 years and I am even still a Dallas Cowboy fan post-Landry era). So, as much as I respect loyalty and commitment, I also look forward to change and being on the cutting edge. Oh yeah... I even carry a picture of Michelle and me from when we were in high school (25 years ago)... ask me... I'll show it to you... We have changed a little!
Some people have referred to this new adventure in ministry as the biggest change in my life. I cannot agree with that statement. It was about seven years ago that I learned the greatest change in my life occurred when I was eight years old. That means it took me 27 years to come to that conclusion. You may be thinking I am a slow learner. No, I was a loyalist who didn't want to change my mind. I was churning out my life and ministry but never reaching my desires. Nothing was ever good enough... including myself.
It was about seven years ago that I realized the change God made through His Son that caused me to be changed when I was eight years old. Get this... In Acts, Stephen was accused of proclaiming that Jesus will change the customs that came from Moses. Thank God for that change. You see, it was that very change in God's plan that allowed me as a child to die from the law and be free as a child of God. The problem is, I never understood that change until seven years ago. I was a freebird who lived my life under many restrictions and yet, never knew it! I repeatedly tried to be the best I could be and would always fall short of even my own expectations (not to mention many other's expectations). It was at that point of understanding that I no longer felt the pressure of what other people thought about me or the things I was doing. God's Spirit changed my heart and allowed this truth (Romans 2:28-29) to be discovered. I will never be the same. I have been changed.

I truly believe this misunderstanding of the truth that I lived under for 27 years is prevelant in today's church. It is the evil one's way of keeping children of God bound up and even non-believers wanting nothing to do with Jesus. It has been that way for a long time. Even Paul tells the church in Rome they don't have to be bound up and fearful. They have the ability to see God as their "Daddy". It doesn't get any better than that. Truth that changes lives. It absolutely has changed mine and I can't do anything but be loyal to that transformation.
I don't want to hear any comments about that picture... I've changed!

Happy Birthday Leavener Ministry, Inc.
It's official... Leavener Ministry, Inc. Here is the birth certificate:

This is just the first of many hoops you have to jump through to become a legal ministry in the state and federally.
It doesn't have anything to do with who I am. My identity is not in what I do. The funny thing is... I have an official ministry recognized by the state of Indiana but I still don't have a clue what that actual ministry will look like.
My last day at Northside is still May 20th. Until then, there is plenty to do. I even get to "preach" this Sunday at both locations. This is proving to be a difficult task because it looks like it will be my last time to share with my church family as a pastor of the church. There is so much to say in such a short amount of time.
It's all good. Gotta stay focused on Jesus.

All Charges Have Been Dropped!!!
For the last year, three Duke lacrosse players have been fighting for their freedom. They have been proclaiming they are innocent of all charges that they sexually assaulted an exotic dancer. Millions of dollars have been spent on this case (through media alone). Their short lives (and others) have suffered greatly through this experience.
Can you imagine the emotions of these three young men (and their parents) when the attorney general says, "Based on the significant inconsistencies between the evidence and the various accounts given by the accusing witness, we believe these three individuals are innocent of these charges"? What an incredible burden lifted. What joy went throughout the individuals, the courtroom, the state, and the country, even the world. Absolute relief and joy!
On the same day, in another room across the country, I got to experience people discovering even a greater joy than the three Duke lacrosse players. I have the opportunity to teach a class on the book of Romans with my very good friends Keith & Terry. Our class each week consists of 10-15 people who desire to discover truth through God's Word. I can honestly say this group has been given a desire to learn... it is absolute fun each week.
I asked the question, "What is going to happen when you and your sin are standing at the Judgment Seat face to face with God?" There is always hesitancy with that question because most people have an idea but aren't really sure. Most everyone in the class was brought up (in the church and at home) believing that we will be held accountable for our sins at the Judgment Seat.
So look at these verses:
Ephesians 4:32
Colossians 2:13
I John 2:12
Hebrews 9:26, 28
Jude 24 - Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy...
Romans 4:7-8 - "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."
Are you kidding me? How in the world can this truth be more evident in the Word of God yet we have been taught differently?
The realization of this truth caused freedom and joy to run amuck in our class. The three Duke lacrosse players experienced a temporary relief and joy. Our class experienced joy they will reign throughout eternity! One student in our class proclaimed, "I had never heard or understood this thought until tonight!!" I can imagine that he is going to sleep incredibly well tonight.
This simple truth that is hidden even within the church makes God's Word to be incredible news.
Some day... I'll stand at God's Judgment Seat and Jesus (the attorney general) will stand before God on my behalf and say, "Based on the lack of evidence I declare Rusty innocent of any charges"!
WAAHHOOOOOO!!!! Does it get any better than that?

Every Day
Once a year we celebrate what God did. We call it Easter. In most homes, it looks like this: The children awake first to discover what the Easter Bunny had left them during the night. (According to USA Today, 42% of the people prefer solid chocolate bunnies.) We slam our coffee and dress ourselves in our Easter Bests... preferably NEW! Then we go to our local church and sit through a well produced one hour service that affirms that Jesus died on the cross and rose to life on Easter Sunday. We have no problem hearing or even agreeing with the message. Why not? Everyone else is... at least this Sunday. Then it is either home to a magnificent meal or our favorite restaurant that we called ahead with reservations. We accomplished Easter for another year.
For some, it is being with family. For others, it is that one hour worship service. To the faithful, it is remembering that Jesus was resurrected.
Is that as good as it gets? One day a year rituals?
Every day... Every day... Every day... True believers experience the resurrection of Jesus every day. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, that without the resurrection of Jesus, our faith and everything we do is useless. Why do we have to wait for Resurrection Sunday? or Easter? What if every day is Resurrection Sunday? What if every day we awoke realizing what Jesus has done for us? What if every day, we realize that we have life here on earth because Jesus overcame death? What if this one day holiday actually became an every day reality?
Paul tells the church in Philippi, that it gets much better than a one hour service once a year or even once a week. He spent the first part of his life doing the ritual things. Now all of a sudden, his life has been transformed by the Spirit of God and he wants to be a part of the resurrection of Jesus every day! And through the work of the Holy Spirit, he absolutely can! Paul gave up his self-righteousness of obeying the Law and now places his life in the resurrection of Jesus who makes him righteous. His every day relationship with Jesus, the resurrected, causes him to understand that it gets better than a one hour worship service. It is any every day, every breath experience.
Thank you Jesus for your death that absolutely leads to life... every day! That's way better than any chocolate bunny!

Why Leavener
While in transition from Northside to whatever... I am working on incorporating a personal ministry. To complete compliance I had to name this new ministry. I tried to think of some kind of theme. For the past seven years I have met with my good friend Keith (Michelle considers him to be my second wife) on Tuesdays at 7 AM at Panera Bread. It was through many discussions, lessons and reading through God's Word that the Spirit has allowed me to discover Truth. These weekly sessions have absolutely had a major impact on my life. Therefore, the theme of a bakery seemed pretty logical. After searching several bakery glossaries, I have chosen the name Leavener. Leavener is not a word found in a dictionary but is definitely used by bakeries. A leavener is the change agent found in a dough product that causes it to rise or transform while it is in a state of rest. The most common leaveners are yeast, baking soda or baking powder.
I can honestly say this same process occurred within me. During the first 2-3 years of just sitting with Keith at Panera each Tuesday, the Holy Spirit allowed me to see things like I have never seen them before. I began to grow in the Truth and discover that my life had truly been transformed. Click on these verses... 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ezekiel 11:18-19, Galatians 2:20.
As I mention the name Leavener to different friends, I get two different comments, sometimes together. "That is very cool" and/or "Do you know what the Bible says about yeast?" That's like telling someone that your car has broken down and they ask you, "Does it have gas?".
Yes, I am aware of the many references to yeast and unleavened throughout the Scriptures. But just like so many other issues in the church, we can be totally misguided because of discussions, teachings, experiences and traditions. It is the same issue the disciples were dealing with after hearing Jesus say just one sentence... "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Read the whole story here - Matthew 16:5-12.
You see... it is not about whether leavener is bad or good. Leavener is neutral. It is a chemical reaction. Just as the Pharisees could have an effect for the negative, the Holy Spirit can have even a greater effect for the positive. It's not about the leavener. It's purely about the transformation. And there is no doubt that I have been transformed. I am holy because God has granted me faith. Just as leavener is the change agent that causes dough to be transformed while it is in state of rest, the Holy Spirit has transformed my life while I have done absolutely nothing. Thank you Jesus!

Humble Confidence
Micah was a prophet with an objectionable message to his audience. The people of Judah thought that everything they were doing was exactly what God wanted them to do. Micah pointed a finger of "religion" at them. They were performing so well their duties as followers of God but... God could care less. Micah informed his peers that they were missing what God desired from them which was to act justly, love with mercy, faithfulness, kindness and walk humbly with your God.
In other words… Micah is saying it is not about you and your crusted rituals. It is about meeting the needs of others and your relationship with your God. (I actually have a friend named Micah and I imagine they are very similar… that is way cool!)
The one question that I have to deal with everyday during this adventure is, “So… what are you going to do after May 20th?” My favorite counselor even asked me that question today… that is pressure! For the very first time, I think I gave an answer besides, “I’m just not sure… whatever God has in store for me.”
I absolutely know that I am going to be in the “people” business. I know that is a “God-thing”. My personality is one that deals with tasks better than people (much like the people Micah was prophesying to.) But because of the Spirit that lives in me (Romans 8:11), I am interested about others. I want them to discover their identity in Christ. I want them to know exactly how the Spirit can change their life. I want them to know their faith makes them righteous. They are saints, not sinners. They are forgiven, redeemed and made new. Jesus has restored the believer and made them holy and blameless.
I am FREE… FREE INDEED!
Understanding my relationship with God causes me to walk humbly.
Understanding my relationship with God causes me to walk with confidence.
I can’t help but tell people about this FREEDOM with a humble confidence.
Thank you God for allowing me to be in the “people” business.

Unexplainable Adventure
In Ephesians 5:32, Paul states the way Christ treats the church is a mystery.
So why does everything have to be explained?
Can't God be God?
Can Truth spread without a formula?
Can we really peal away marketing and programs from "the church"?
Can the Word of God stand by itself?
Wouldn't it be incredible to be involved in something that just couldn't be explained? A true mystery! To say these questions are idealistic, utopian or impractical speaks to the size of your God. Paul tells us in Romans 4:17 that God calls into existence something that does not exist. That is incredible. That is something that people will clamor to be a part of when God is the only answer for results.
This chapter of my adventure began on Monday, December 4th at 2 AM. That was when God abruptly awoke me and clearly enlightened me that I was finished serving in a full-time ministry position at the church I have served in for the last 18 years. Are you kidding me? Are we really having this conversation at 2 AM? Surely this can wait! Then Michelle, my wife, was abruptly woken. This can't be happening! I informed her about the message. We discussed it briefly, prayed and went back to sleep.
The next morning, my pastor was the first person with which I shared this information. This news has absolutely consumed me. I am to leave my ministry position to go to what? Lord, I absolutely trust you in this adventure. I trust that You will paint the picture on this blank canvas.
Many will think this description has more to do about others. The truth is this is about a man whose personality and leadership has collided with his faith... and today... his faith has risen to the top.
I look forward to being a part of something I can't even explain. How long will that continue? I guess that is why it is an adventure!

Never Done This Before
I did something I have never done in my life before today... I resigned.
Northside celebrated Rusty & Michelle Kennedy's 18th anniversary as a staff member. It was at that point that I shared with the church that God was moving us on from Northside. It is like turning 18 and time to move out of the house to start your own life.
In December, God spoke very clearly to Michelle and I that it was time to begin our own ministry/church. We have walked through this process very slowly at this point. We have shared every thought and meeting with our pastor and staff. We have met with friends, denominational workers and our own two children. We are not quite sure what ministry God is calling us to next. I feel as if it will be a personal ministry in the beginning and then move into a church plant. We hope to stay in our community were we currently live.
Our leaving has nothing to do with my relationship with our church or staff. I genuinely love them all and will continue to be a part of them. They are my family and friends. But this departure is purely based on the calling God has on my life.
Kind of scary, but it is a huge leap of faith... or else I am just stupid. The whole "leap of faith" thing makes it pretty exciting as well. We have no idea what God has in store for us. Our last day on staff at Northside is scheduled for Sunday, May 20th. After that, the door is wide open. I will keep you updated...
Until then, pray that God will give us clarity for future ministry.
